You Find a Shell

You find a shell.

You pick it up and place your ear against the smoothness....listening for her sea song, or just a word or two to tell you she is special.

You marvel at the colors, textures. Each unique.  So fragile yet so strong.  A gift from the tumbling ocean depths.

You find a shell.

If it feels good in your hand, you carefully slip it in your pocket, keep it close and take it home...

This is a special shell. I want to climb inside it and crawl into the sea.

Lovely Shell.... When I was a child we used to take holidays at a place called Majunga on the north west coast of Madagascar and my brother and I would pick up huge shells off the beach. Soon there will be no more of these wonders for children to discover. Love this. Tim

@elephantbird I always wanted one of those giant seashells...odd that a girl named Shell wouldn't have one:) i love that feeling when you are walking along the beach, scanning the broken fragments when suddenly you discover a perfectly intact shell. Magic moment. Thanks Tim xo

@lizbeth33 Anything that transports me to my favorite place on earth, especially during a cold, grey November day, is magic to me:) Was missing summer...and this quick sketch poured out of me...intuitive? We often know exactly what it is we need.

@holly59 I relate very much to that seashell. But I also think that all of my work is in some way or another, a very personal reflection of me. I paint what I feel, more so than paint what is actually before my eyes. I see the shell, but my mind and emotion change it as the ink and watercolor flows. There is subtle and often not so subtle shifts from reality in my work. My journey is revealing itself a bit more, from piece to piece. If someone wants to know me, they need only look at my art, read my words...it's all right there. This shell felt like home to me....so your words really made me smile. Thank you xo :)

Such beautiful line quality, Shell. So many emotions spoken of as my eye caresses the edge. Strong, weak, sure, unsure, bold, tentative, taut, relaxed...all awash and barely containing a glorious burst of vibrant and subtly inflected color. Truly a self-portrait in the most engaging and intimate sense. I will "keep it close and take it home" :)

I'm glad I found a Shell on the seashore of Twitter, yet I'm not sure whether she found me.

You can only find what relates to you in a special way and that relation goes both ways.

If you hold the shell to your ear it's your own blood that sings the song of the sea. Shells can do that :)

@detlef_c I thought/dreamt on your words. So... what you're saying, is that the shell is only a mirror/vessel for the magic? :)

The shell is an archetype, a reminder that there's more beneath the hard, shiny surface. We seek the prize that's beneath its shiny surface...

I'm convinced that the "you" and the "me", outside and inside are just the way we experience life as human beings. They belong together and they are together.

So if you find something outside that deeply relates to something inside that is a reminder of this ultimate reality of belonging and togetherness.

What could be more "out there" than the sea? What could be more "in here" than the sound of your blood?

Remembering the warmth of summer, love your words as much as the watercolor. Something very special here, hope you continue what you started in 2009!

@blogbrevity yes...the journey I began last year is incomplete. I lost my precious time...and have struggled with how to get it back in a way that doesn't leave all of those around me feeling lost/empty. If it were up to me, I would lock myself away for long stretches to just create...I have never allowed or indulged myself that kind of selfish freedom. This year, I hope to find the way, to be balanced and yet still true to myself...I have a long way to go still on this very personal journey. Thank you for gently reminding me,in your own lovely way, of what I need to do. Much love...xo
